After winning the Kookaburra Cup in 2014/15 we won our way into the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash for season 2015/16. Each of the 16 Cricket Victoria Regions provides 1 club to represent their region with us representing Gippsland.
It is a knockout competition and we were drawn Dandenong and District Cricket Association powerhouse Springvale South first up. Their side was further bolstered by imports Michael Vandort and Malinga Bandara who between them represented Sri Lanka in 28 tests. Vandort scored 4 hundreds in his time in test cricket with 1144 runs next to his name.
Winning the toss and batting first we got off to a good start before Sam Bristow was caught for 11 with the score on 28. We then moved onto 1 for 48 before the introduction of leg spinner Malinga Bandara put the breaks on. He claimed the wickets of Cormac Hassett (4), Bohdi Walker (0) and Ben Channing (0) while captain Taylor Tatterson fell at the other end for 25. Bandara finished his 3 over spell with figures of 3 for 1.
We were seriously struggling at 6 for 53 before some late order hitting from Travis Millar (17) and Jack Rietschel (23) got us to what we thought was a competitive score of 111.
The innings started off well with Willy Wiseman claiming the prized scalp of Michael Vandort. However it was soon clear that 111 was not going to be enough as Springvale captain Craig Slocombe smashed us to all parts in his innings of 69 not out. They passed us 1 down in the 10th over of the game.
